5+5+10 is not always the same as doing 20-- When starting a homework assignment in class, break it up into smaller parts. If you want the kids to do 20 math problems, assign students only the first 5 and ask them to complete the 5 now in class. GO over the 5 problems, maybe on the chalk board. Then assign 5 more, and after they have completed those, review the answers alound so students can check their work. Lastly, assign them the final 10 problems as homework. Because this method breaks down the 20 problems into smaller tasks, it seems easier to students than assigning them all 20 at once. Also, the pacing not only helps keep them on task, but fosters more participation as well. Try this same pattern with other subjects. --in memory of Charlie Raider, Akron Teacher (Innes)
