June 1st Is Deadline for Yellow, Green Transfers

Teacher transfer forms must be submitted to Human Resources by June 1. Green forms are to be used by teachers requesting a voluntary transfer. Yellow forms must be completed by teachers who are being reduced from their buildings because of a decrease in enrollment. To ensure proper processing of your transfer request, please follow these simple guidelines:

By filing a green transfer form, you are indicating to the administration that you are not required to leave your current assignment, but that if an assignment is available in any of the buildings you list, you want to be transferred. You should prioritize only the buildings to which you wish to be assigned whether or not you know of a vacancy in that building. If there are no assignments available in the buildings you list, you will be returned to your previous assignment.

By filing a yellow transfer form, you are indicating that you are being involuntarily moved from your assignment. You should prioritize every building on the back of the transfer form, again whether or not you are aware of vacancies in particular buildings. If you do not prioritize every building on this form, and there are no vacancies in the buildings you do list, the administration will place you wherever they wish among the unprioritized buildings. Generally, teachers who are required to file the yellow form will be in a new assignment the following year. However, under certain circumstances you might be eligible to return to the building. If your preference is to stay at the building if the opportunity arises, you should prioritize your current building as #1 on your list.

Transfer Tips

Be very specific about your preference of grade level over building or vice versa. If necessary, include comments on the back of your transfer form to clarify your grade level or subject area preferences.

Transfers are made on the basis of seniority (years of continuous service in APS). Because of the closing of Crosby School, teachers there will receive a priority in transfer within their group’s seniority ranking before other green and yellow transfer requests are honored.

Tenure plays no role in the processing of transfers.

The seniority tiebreaker for members hired the same year is the date on which the member was offered a contract.

Transfers are processed in late July and notifications are sent at the beginning of August.

There are an unusually high number of school districts on the ballot this August. This despite the traditionally miserable success rates for school issues at that time of year.

Ohio lawmakers are directly responsible for the financial crisis many districts are facing, and for the large number of teachers who will be laid off in 2004-05 as a result of the crisis.

We urge you to get involved in bringing about change by indicating on the form on the back of this edition of the NOTES how you are willing to help Brian Williams win the Ohio House 41st District seat. Please return the form to us before summer break.

GOLF OUTING NETS $1,000 FOR CANCER WALK

Saturday’s AEA Open at Brookledge Golf Club raised slightly over $1,000 towards AEA’s Major Sponsor fee of $5,000 for next fall’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

Fifty-two Akron teachers, their friends and family members enjoyed a day of food (provided by FirstMerit Bank), drink, camaraderie and good-natured competition. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, every golfer walked away with two prizes. The Akron Teachers Credit Union donated a complimentary movie pass to each participant. Liberty Mutual Insurance offered a four-day flyaway weekend to any golfer firing a hole-in-one on the 12th hole. Unfortunately, the best effort of the day fell about 15 feet short. Liberty also raffled off a folding chair, a stadium kit, a shirt, cups and tees.  Dick’s Sporting Goods at Chapel Hill donated many prizes to help ensure that every golfer’s name was drawn in the prize lottery.

The weather couldn’t have been better, even though Mother Nature was responsible for a few extra water traps left by the previous night’s heavy rainfall. The real pros were undaunted. Harold Ickes (Garfield) took Closest to the Pin laurels. For his efforts, Harold was awarded dinner for two at Akron’s finest Greek food restaurant, Gus’ Chalet. Robert Knabe (Human Resources) took timely advantage of one of the day’s stronger gusts to win the Longest Drive award and dinner for two at Dontino’s, the area’s premier Italian eatery. Two teams split championship honors, shooting 66’s on the par 70 course. Central-Hower’s Ron Linger, Dick Rudgers, Dwight Carter and Bill DiMascio, the second group to tee-off, led all day until their somewhat premature celebration was cut short by the last group in, Kenmore’s formidable foursome of Bob Pyett, Diana Harris and Ed and Traci Peltz, who also shot a 66. All eight golfers received complimentary 9 hole passes at Brookledge.

RIF LIST UPDATES

State Rules Require New IPDP for Each License Renewal

Members should be aware that after receiving a new five-year license, a new Individual Professional Development Plan must be approved by the LPDC before any course work taken toward renewing the license can count toward the renewal. In other words, a new IPDP must be done for each license cycle.

The LPDC recommends that you file a new IPDP as soon as you receive a new license to insure that you have one in place before you begin your coursework for that next renewal five years down the road.

The latest update to the RIF list was posted this week on our website. Uncertainty about the Retirement Incentive and how special education positions will be filled has minimized the number of changes to the list. Once these issues are resolved and decisions are made this summer about promotions, leaves, resignations, etc., we expect to see a more significant reduction in the number of names on the list.

For the latest update, visit out website at www.akronteach.org.

AEA Night at the Stadium Sold Out

All 230 tickets for the 22nd Annual AEA Night at the Stadium this Friday have been sold. The game will be preceded by a picnic style meal from 5-6:45 at St. Maron’s Church on Carnegie just east of the field.

Volunteers Needed for Williams Campaign

I’m tired of business as usual in Columbus. Sign me up to help elect Brian Williams to the 41st Ohio House District seat. I am willing to:

____ Make telephone calls       ____ Help in mass mailings

____ Walk a portion of the district to make literature drops

____ Put up a yard sign (must live in the 41st District)

____ Captain a team doing any of the above

We are organizing now to hit the ground running in the fall. Please return to AEA before the summer recess.
