State Revises HQT for Teachers Changing Subjects or Grade Level
APS contacts with the Ohio Department of Education have reported that ODE has again revised its stance on some HQT requirements.
Regular ed. teachers who have been assigned to a new grade level or a new subject area and do not already meet HQT for those new assignments will now have one year where they may meet HQT by using the HOUSSE rules. The HOUSSE rules require 90 clock hours of staff development (up to 45 clock-hours of pedagogy & at lease 45 hours in content) to meet HQT.
An ODE presentation at their Spring conference on 2/27/2007 listed the following criteria for teachers who may use HOUSSE rules: adding a subject area, changing grade level, returning to teaching after at least one year’s absence, those who have not been teaching since January of 2002, or those who have not been teaching in Ohio. Teachers meeting this criteria will have one year to meet HQT under the HOUSSE rules--see pdf of ODE presentation, "HOUSSE Exception Criteria."
Teachers can also meet HQT anytime by passing the PRAXIS II Content test.
