Retirement Incentive: We anticipate meeting with the Board’s attorney and Lowell Davis within the next week to ten days. We are hopeful that we will have a decision up or down on an incentive by the end of the month. Please remind members that the early retirement announcement is a separate issue from an incentive, and that those who are retiring at the end of the year can announce by April 1 and not jeopardize their eligibility for an incentive, if we have one.
Secretaries/ Strike Authorization Notice: The vote taken by the secretaries recently does not mean they will strike. What they voted on was giving their leadership authorization to send a ten day strike notice. Depending on how negotiations proceed, that notice may never be sent. We have sent a letter to Human Resources asking the Director to instruct principals to not solicit members to cover for secretaries in the event they do strike. A copy is enclosed in your package.
Robishaw Elected Treasurer: The Board of Trustees elected Salary Chairman John Robishaw to fill the unexpired term of retiring AEA Treasurer Jackie Hovey. John is the librarian at Firestone High School and has served the Association for years as a negotiator and in several other capacities.
Levy: Funding for Issue 1 is critical. We are in the midst of our collection campaign. We are also seeking building levy coordinators for the campaign. Please continue distribution of the reminders we are sending out from time to time. Forward collected money to us through the pony. We have a list of members in your building who have contributed to help you figure out whom to approach for contributions.
State Health Care Board: Nothing new has happened since our report in Random Notes. We do not yet have a schedule of meeting dates for the Board as yet. It is highly unlikely that the Board will make any recommendations in time to be acted upon for next school year.
Negotiations/Budget: We have not requested a reopening at this time. We are waiting for the Board to act on the budget for next year. We are also in touch with the other bargaining units in Akron to discuss common approaches that we might take on negotiations this year.
